Cetlic Courier: Farewell and thanks

A beautiful shirt from secretaries in attendance and the main office-- a special weekend.  Wow! Embroidery from DBA.

Dear Staff,

It is hard to put into words all of the emotions from this week but I know the one word that sums it up is LOVE.  It just seemed that the whole building and the Schott was teaming with love in so many different ways, for all of the retirees on Friday, for each other gathering as a staff at the luncheon, for the graduates on Saturday, and more.  It is wonderful to come together some of life's most poignant moments together.

An arena full of love.

A stunning performance by our choir.  Thanks, Jeanne!

One of my favorite things to do as principal-- hugging and shaking students' hands on the stage. A special memory.

I want to especially thank all of you for all of the gifts, cards, flowers, good wishes and kind words in the past week.  Thanks to Kay for keeping so many things a surprise and scanning photos and secretly organizing such a touching celebration for me and my family.  Much thanks to Carrie McJunkin also for all of her hours in putting together the video together with Kay.  I truly can't thank Kay, Sharon and Carol enough for all of their friendship and love-- we have had quite a time together every day for the last 11 years.

Some of the special cards and gifts at our home. Thanks so much!

I want to thank every single one of you for all of your hard work every day for students and staff at Jerome.  All of you-- custodians, secretaries, cafeteria workers, teachers, parapros, Pete, Chuck, administrators--You are truly what makes Jerome special for students and parents every day and whether you know it or not-- you change lives every day.

Thanks to each Department Chair for and all of you who have served as Department Chairs at Jerome.  It is not easy being a teacher-leader and making difficult decisions sometimes with peers.  Thanks so much for your support.

Thanks to all of the Charter members of Jerome-- those staff who took a risk to come and help create a new high school.  From day 1, you committed to Jerome and we appreciate so much your , leadership, help and expertise in building Jerome into what it is today. Thanks to Sondra Snodgrass for creating what is most likely the best tradition any high school has today-- clapping in students on the first day of school.  Please know that when you are all standing up and clapping next year, I will be re-living it in my mind and wishing I was there.  So much of what we take for granted in life that we believe we will always have and do in life is fleeting, and some of our best Jerome traditions are what come to mind for me.

What will I miss about Jerome. EVERYTHING.  It is intertwined with all I do and feel.  But most of all-- you.

I will miss Angie and her enthusiasm for life. And all of you who love life, work, your family and time with your Jerome family.

I will miss TEAM-- and everything that word means.  All of my fellow administrative team members have been the brothers I never had.  I am especially proud of those who moved on to being Principal and other leaders-- Bob Scott, Tom McDonnell, Mark Mousa, Mike Aurin and Rick Bailey.

I will miss Fred and CD, longtime staff members who go back to Coffman, and all of the other longterm staff members. Wow 15 years or so of working together.

As I embark on a new stage in life, I am reminded of the quote I have carried in my wallet for years and also have it in my office:

"The time to be happy is now,
The place to be happy is here,
The way to be happy is to make others so."

I have tried so hard to live my life like this-- whether it was when I was home with Jennifer and watching her grow up, times with Jeff, and certainly my time at Jerome.  In the back of my mind I knew someday it would end, and I have always lived to be all in in everything I have done in life, a sense of urgency that we only have 24 hours in every day and that life is not long enough.

Everywhere I go I run into someone who asks me why I am retiring.  Even before graduation on the floor of the Schott one of our graduate's grandfathers came down and asked me, in fact he actually told me I shouldn't be retiring.  It was one of those surreal moments. :)

I am retiring for my good friends Marina Davis, Kathy Case and Linda Kovanda-- who all spoke of retirement and never got to do it.

And I am retiring, as I stated in my graduation speech, because I do not how many grains of sand are in my hourglass of life, but I know that to spend time with Jeff, Jennifer, Marisol and Ryan--- it will not be enough time.  And as we grow old together, I want to continue to create lasting memories with my family.  And I long to have my granddaughter know and love me.

It was very special to have my whole family at graduation, even Marisol, her first visit to the Schott!

Dusty Miller is a remarkable administrator and person; I love Dusty and he has always been a good friend to me.  It was special to have him at graduation.  At the end I went to his seat and pulled him to the middle of the stage with me so we could stand together during the recessional. It was special for me to have him with me watching my last class leave the arena.

Dusty and I-- 2 friends-- forever Celtics.

I will always remember how special you have all made this transition to retirement.  I hope to see you at El Vacquero on 161-- not the one in Shawnee Hills-- after school so we can toast together all of the good memories of Jerome life and those to come!  Let's party down together.

Thank you.  I love you.  I wish for each of you good health and happiness in life. If I can ever help you in any way, please let me know.  I hope to see you around Dublin, and maybe at some Celtic events!  Have a fun summer and a wonderful life.

The front of the new shirt-- so awesome.

Thanks for the time of my life.

Always a Celtic,

Cathy

"Vision to See, Faith to Believe, Courage to Do"

Dear Staff,

Dad's dogtags he wore into battle on Day 1 of Iwo Jima, his Purple Heart for his combat injury and his favorite Marine Corps mascot statue that sat on his end table next to his favorite chair for years.  Semper Fi.  Never forget.
We hope you are having a good Memorial Day weekend with your families, with cookouts, bike rides, and family time.

We know many of you are also thinking of family members presently serving in the military or those who served in the military, as well as those brave Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice or are Wounded Warriors, still living the physical or psychological effects of combat.

If you have never watched the National Memorial Day Concert from Washington DC shown on Sunday night before Memorial Day, please take time to watch it or clips from it.  Hosted by Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, the real-world stories of our everyday soldiers and their families are amazing.

The freedoms we enjoy and teach our students are not free.  It is the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, and the Greatest Generation ever is almost gone, the remaining members well into their 90's now.  It is up to us to teach our children the sacrifices of all of military personnel, past, present and future.

Marisol on her first Memorial Day!

This Week:

Much thanks to all of you who made the seniors last week go smoothly.  Thanks also to those of you who traveled to Cedar Point with our seniors, and a special thanks to Diane Murphy and Michael Cook for organizing the trip!

Seniors are finishing exams Tuesday- Thursday.  Again-- please let us know if a senior is failing or will fail your course.

Wednesday: Mandatory graduation practice for all seniors participating in graduation. 1 PM in aux gym.

We have many banquets this week and some of our teams are still in competition, including Track and Boys LAX.  Boys LAX faces Liberty Wednesday as tourney play continues.

Wednesday:  Please send the names of Juniors and Seniors who have D's and F's to Colleen Bender in attendance so we know who is required to stay for exam week in its entirety.   We know exam week is a little different this time with PARCC exams exempting exams for 9th and 10th graders and in Gov for Juniors.  We will do the best job we can in tracking who is supposed to be here but truly do not want this to be a stressor for you. Just do the best you can in communicating to students what exams they are exempt in and we will go from there.  All students who took the AP or IB test and PARCC exams are exempt in those subjects.

Congrats to proud Mom Lori-- Brad and Carly both are District Champs in the 3200, each lapping other competitors in the race and winning with big leads!  Good luck in Regionals!

Thursday: End of Senior Exams and the start of Underclassmen Exams.  Exam bell schedule.  Periods 1-2 exams

Friday: Period 3-4 Exams.  Also Staff Luncheon sponsored by PTO starting at 1 PM.  We are moving this from the last day of school to accommodate our retiring staff members whose last day is Friday, May 29.  We will say goodbye to Elenita Irwin, Robert Durrett, Kelly Snyder and Peggy Russell.  We have also invited back Terri Hazucha but am uncertain if she can attend.  We would like the entire staff to join this end-of-the-year luncheon.

Saturday: Graduation 4 PM at the Schott.  Much thanks to all of you who have volunteered to work Graduation-- one of our largest turnouts!  Thanks so much!  All who work can leave early on June 2.  We truly appreciate your work prior to the ceremony as well as supporting our students and parents in this historic family event.

Monday, June 1: Periods 5-6 exams.

June 2: Period 7 Exam. Last Day for students and staff.

June 3: All grades due complete and accurate by 4 PM.  Classified Recognition Breakfast 7 AM Scioto.

Thanks for making a difference every day for our students, parents, other staff, and for me.

Have a great week!

Dear Staff,

We hope you have had a great weekend with your families, even with the rainy weather.  Last week was a terrific week, with many exciting activities in classes and after school.

We had two awesome concerts which also featured Senior Recognition in Orchestra and Band.  This week is the Choir Concert.  Much thanks to our Performing Arts Department for their excellence in performances.  Just amazing concerts!

Seniors at the Orchestra Concert receive their special gifts, personally embroidered Orchestra Celtic blankets.
It is always amazing to see all of the outstanding experiential learning activities in our classrooms.

Josh Manner and Ron Havlice's AP Chem students make Oobleck on the back patio.

Students in Marls Morris's Honors Spanish V class learning Latin dancing with instruction from the Erana sisters.

A busy Senior Week with Senior Awards night on Tuesday ended with Senior Dinner on Friday night.  Much thanks to Diane Murphy and Michael Cook for helping to plan and facilitate this event with Senior Cabinet and also Carrie McJunkin for working with the Verve staff to produce the special Senior issue distributed Friday night.

A packed house of Seniors for Senior Dinner with a wonderful catered Italian buffet.

This Week:

As we near the end of the Senior Class attending Jerome and the end of the year, it is crucial that your Progress Book grades are up-to-date. Again, if you have seniors in danger of failing your class, please notify their guidance counselor and administrator immediately.

All Senior teachers should have notified Seniors whether they are taking the exam in their class or not.  You should have also notified your Department chair of any senior required to take the senior exam.

If a senior is taking a make-up AP Exam, it is important that you check that the senior has indeed taken the AP exam.  If the senior does not taken the AP exam, he or she is required to take the exam in your class. Seniors with an 80% or higher or who take the AP or IB exam are exempt from the exam.

We also need you very visible this week before and after school and during class changes, especially with the seniors last day in class Tuesday.  If you have indicated to your seniors that they should be in class on Wednesday during Beach Day, you must meet the students at the attendance door.  Otherwise we will not let the seniors enter the building.

We will have Working Wednesday for teacher collaboration May 20 and May 27.

Much thanks to all of you who have indicated you will attend graduation.  We all appreciate your help and dedication very much.  Please remember that by doing so you have earned a .5 day to leave early on June 2.  Thanks again.

At our HS Principal's Meeting this week all three high school agreed to having grades due on June 3 by 4 PM.  Please make sure that your grades are accurate and posted by this date and time.  Please also make sure that Kay has accurate summer contact info for you so that we can reach you in case there is a grade question.

Celtic Courier: Week of May 11- 15, 2015

"Vision to See, Faith to Believe, Courage to Do"

Dear Staff,

Happy Mother's Day weekend!  What a glorious weekend of weather and Mother's Day!  Ours began with seeing God at 2:34 AM May 9 with the birth of Marisol Ann Mitchell, 7 lbs. 2 oz, 19.5 inches!  Jennifer's water broke at El Vacquero's right as I was leaving for Volleyball Senior night from home.  Because of bleeding she was transported by squad to OSU Medical Center.  Because the baby was breech a C-Section was performed and so we pulled an all-nighter Friday night and have been on Cloud 9 ever since.  And yes-- I beat the squad to the hospital.  :)

The baby's "aunts" Susie Quinn, Sharon Nameth and Kay were also at El Vacquero's at the same time having some water after working out and came to our rescue, helping Ryan and Jennifer as the squad came, calling me, and then caravanning to OSU with Kay driving Ryan's car so that he would have a car there.  They also sat with me in the waiting area as we initially waited word on whether Jennifer and the baby were OK.  Truly-- they personify what it means to work in the Jerome family.  I think they also have some fun stories to share about that drive to OSU!

And so our lives will never be the same-- last week started with Jennifer's surprise shower from her students, Jennifer's birthday dinner with us at Buca's on Wednesday and now,  we have spent the weekend with little sleep, numerous trips to OSU and looking in the eyes of the future of our family.  Amazing! Jennifer kept the name a surprise-- it is Spanish.  Jennifer is bilingual and studied in Spain for a semester, living with a family who spoke no English.  The name ends in Sol-- which means sun-- and Marisol is and always will be the sunshine of our lives.

Marisol is staring into my eyes here as Jennifer looks on.

Every new baby at OSU this year gets a National Champion baby blanket.  Future member TBDBITL rookie member Class of 2033.

Happy Mother's Day to Jennifer and to all mothers!  What a special Mother's Day!

This Week:

AP and IB Testing continues.  Much thanks to Lisa Bauer, Karen Kendall-Sperry, Forrest and Andy for all of their hard work in giving almost 1700 AP or IB tests.  Wow!

Monday: Our school board will recognize Linda Qin for being a Presidential Scholar and Michael Zeng for being Fencing State Champion in Foil.  A great night to be a Celtic!

Tuesday: Senior Awards Night at 7 PM.  Seniors receive Academic Awards and Local Scholarships.  A special night for them and their parents.

Wednesday: Kenny Titus fundraisers all lunches Wed. Thurs and Fri.  Please try to come down and buy a raffle ticket.  All proceeds go to Kenny's family for his heart transplant costs.

Staff Meeting at 7:15 in the Band Room.  Last one for year.  English will present important info on  Turnitin.com and its usage.  This is important info for every dept given the problems with cheating we have had this year.  Heidi Muirhead sent you information for you prior to this staff meeting last week.  Coffee will be provided.  I will start the meeting and then leave for a presentation at OU.  Dusty will also be at the meeting to meet and talk with the staff.

Also our Spring Orchestra concert at 7 PM.  Both orchestra and band have their spring concerts this week and if you get a chance, please come.  They are always special!

As we end the year, we thought you would enjoy all the ways to be a good teammate to your fellow staff members, courtesy of Jon Gordon via Twitter from @jongordon11

Thursday:  Band Concert 7 PM.

Friday: Seniors grade for the semester as of May 15 determines if they take the exam in your class or not.  All students who take AP or IB tests are exempted.  Seniors with an 80% or higher cumulative for the semester also exempt the exam.  Please tell seniors on Friday if they are taking your exam or not.

Spring Fling picnic all 3 lunches with Jazz Band providing music!  Come outside and enjoy lunch in our back parking lot with great music!

Also Senior Dinner at 6 PM.

A word about next week and Seniors:

May 19: Seniors last day in class.  Make sure you have collected books, all work, etc.

May 20:  Seniors last day at Jerome.  Yes, they will be riding trikes, bikes, wagons, boats, etc to school so we need your help inside and out.  Yes, they are planning a beach, concert today and will be out by the tennis courts.

How you can help-- do not ask seniors to see you on May 20 for any reason.  Our goal is not to have them in the building for any reason.  If you are collecting work for them or asking them to pick up projects etc, they need to do it either on May 19 or sometime during senior exams that start on May 22.

Be in the halls as much as possible from now until the seniors last day.  If you hear of any senior pranks please notify an administrator as soon as possible so that we can intervene.

May 21: Senior trip to Cedar Point.  You may have some seniors in class who are not going and who have to be in class because they are athletes and have a contest that night.

May 22- 28: Senior exams.  Mike Aurin previously sent out an informational email.  Please inform your seniors on or before May 19 that they have an exam, and the date and time of that exam.  It is your responsibility to notify seniors of exams.

Have a terrific week!

"Vision to See, Faith to Believe, Courage to Do"

Dear Staff,

Finally-- a beautiful spring weekend of weather!  And May is here-- so much to do, so little time! But a wonderful time to be a high school staff member where excitement is high every day, culminating in graduation on May 30 at 4 PM.  We hope you will all try to attend.  Remember that all staff members who work graduation can leave .5 day early on June 2.  Please let Kay know if you can help.

What a great weekend!  It started with a fantastic International Day Friday thanks to Multicultural Club and Magen Beatty's leadership.

It is always a special day to celebrate the diversity of our Jerome family!

It was a beautiful Saturday for our Prom and we were blessed with a safe Prom weekend!  Much thanks to Diane Murphy and Michael Cook for all of their hard work and dedication in providing this opportunity for our students.

The OSU Student Union is a beautiful venue with an attached outdoor patio for the exclusive use of our sstudents.

Kanaad Parvate and Ahana Walia were crowned King and Queen!

The students always love to see staff members come like Profe . . .

and Michelle Adair and her husband Brian!
Working every Prom it seems are Roger and Diane Murphy, Michael Cook and Ann Beaufore who checked in students all night long!  Diane and Roger have been working Proms since 1997!  Wow!

A new twist to the Prom this year was our students witnessing an unexpected peaceful protest coming through the Ohio Union.  Although police provided security the peaceful protest was an educational view of democracy in action for our students as the protesters gathered in the middle of the Union chanting and carrying signs Black Lives Matter.  We and the students found it very interesting to view and people of all ages gathered in a contrast of prom dresses, tuxes and T-shirts carrying protest slogans.

A protest and a Prom-- study of American culture contrasts Saturday night.

This Week:

Happy Staff Appreciation Week!  PTO and we have some special small gifts for you throughout the week.  We so much appreciate everything all of you do every day to make Jerome a special place for staff, students and parents.

Monday: AP/IB testing. No adjusted bell schedule but we do have PARCC US Gov at 1 PM in the Aux Gym.

Tuesday: AP/IB testing.  End of PARCC with Physical Science in the AM and US History in the PM.

Also School Nurses's Day!  Thanks Alicia Plymale, our school nurse, and Barb Bailey, Clinic Aide, for providing such good care to our students with medical needs or concerns.

Celtic Courier: Week of April 27-May 1, 2015

"Vision to See, Faith to Believe, Courage to Do"

Graphic courtesy of Chase Meilke via Twitter. We know you choose to be this person for our students every day.

Dear Staff,

We hope you are able to enjoy this sunny Sunday with your families after the cold and rainy Saturday.

What a great week! It started with us exceeding our goal at the Blood Drive and included one of our all-time favorite days of the year: Take Your Child to Work Day.  Much thanks to DBA for making designing and making the children's T-Shirts for this year.  What a great new design!
Interspersed throughout this Courier will be photos of staff with their children.  It is always terrific to see you with your children and see all of the little Celtics, the love of our lives.

Our students and staff donated generously, exceeding our goal with over 50 pints collected.  Much thanks to Carla Crawford and her cheerleading team for organizing this community service project.

This Week:

Evals are all due by Friday.  Please help us in two ways.  First, if you have not sent your refinement and reinforcement goal for your Final Summative Rating form please do it before the end of the day on Monday.  Secondly, once your admin has let you know that the form is ready for your signature, PLEASE sign it as soon as possible.  Thanks for your help!

An update on the Master Schedule-- We have been interviewing in English and Science and will soon interview in PE/Health.  The district protocol requires two building interviews, one with a team of admin and teachers and then 2-3 candidates moving on to a building teaching interview.  We work with Central office to identify interview candidates based on screening interview scores.  Thanks to our dept chairs and our teachers and counselors who are on our interview teams.  Hiring a new staff member is one of the most important steps a building can take.

We have changed the master schedule building days to May 6, 7, and 8 due to some late staffing and course decisions.  Again, the schedule building team is comprised of admin, counselors, and staff for input.  Any staff member is invited to observe.

Graphic courtesy of @weareteachers via Twitter.  What we have always focused on every day-- getting better every day.

Tuesday and Wednesday: PARCC Testing for Alg I and Geometry. Andy sent out the adjusted schedule for this week that mimics last week's schedule.  No Working Wednesday due to testing.  Thanks for all you have done to help our youngest students do their best on these new assessments.

Graphic courtesy of @jmattmiller via Twitter.
Tuesday: Last Parent Breakfast for this year.  Dusty and I will both take parents' questions.  We have been doing our best at meeting with various groups to ensure the transition goes as smoothly as possible.

Tuesday is also Parents of Black Students District student recognition at Coffman at 7 PM.

Wednesday: PARCC Testing. No Working Wednesday due to testing. Dusty and I will be attending a Building Budget meeting together at CO.

Thursday: Dusty will meet with the Department Chairs in the Media Center at 7:15 AM.

In addition we will meet with all Seniors and discuss all senior activities and behavior expectations. All seniors are required to attend on this schedule; Period 2: Seniors with last names A-G; Period 3: H-N; Period 4: O-Z.  Please make sure you dismiss seniors for these important meetings with Chuck Collier and the admin team.

Thursday is also the the PTO Appreciation Luncheon for PTO volunteers.  Dusty and I will both attend.

Friday: YPA Breakfast at the Golf Club of Dublin. Also Student Recognition at the Catalyst for Positive Change Event.

During all three lunches will be MultiCultural Day, celebrating the myriad of cultures of Jerome students and their families.  Don't miss the wonderful cultural displays and try food from all around the world!  Much thanks to Multicultural Club and Magen Beatty for organizing and planing this awesome event!

Although not with Mom, you can surely see Bethany's face in her daughter!

Saturday: Prom from 8-midnight at OSU Student Union.  Much thanks to Diane and Michael for all of their hard work in organizing all of our Junior and Senior events!  After-Prom at Ten Pin Alley in Hilliard 11:30 - 1: 30 AM. Much thanks to PTO for sponsoring this event.
